ABOUT SITEWORKCALC

A clearer starting point.

Siteworkcalc makes practical material calculators for people planning outdoor and building projects. We start with a clear measurement task, show the math and keep the assumptions visible.

What the dirt calculator does

It turns dimensions or area and depth into volume. Optional supplier density, bag volume and price turn that volume into weight, whole bags and a material estimate. It does not select a soil blend, design a foundation or determine a safe structural thickness.

Our calculation method

For US dimensions, cubic yards = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (in) ÷ 324. Metric dimensions are converted using 1 ft = 0.3048 m. Calculations retain precision internally; display values are rounded. Whole bag counts round up at the purchasing step.

An extra allowance multiplies geometric volume by 1 + the allowance percentage. It is not the same as an engineering compaction factor. Bulk material state and density need to match.

Sources and assumptions

We reference NIST unit definitions, Texas A&M AgriLife volume guidance and USDA NRCS soil density guidance. A cited source does not endorse this website.

There is no universal dirt density or nationwide delivered price built into this calculator. Your supplier’s material specification and quotation are the appropriate inputs. Confirm final order quantities, increments, material suitability and delivery arrangements with them.

Corrections and feedback

If a result seems wrong, send the input values, units and the issue to contact@siteworkcalc.com. Do not include private information you do not need to share.
